Do you remember that episode of ‘Friends’ where Ross, Chandler and Joey go to a club? They sit in the coffee house afterwards complaining about the whole experience and talk about getting older. I felt a bit like that last night. We went out with a few friends and lots of other business colleagues. We didn’t go to a club – oh my god no. We just went for out of a meal in Manchester.

The whole thing lasted for 6 hours at the end of which we spent a further 40 minutes trying to flag a taxi. I was absolutely shattered before we even got to the first course. It was noisy and you had to shout to be heard and I guess it didn’t help that we were stuck with a group of weekend millionaires. You know the type, they have to order a bottle of champagne at each round. And they talked utter drivel all night. I could’ve had a more intelligent conversation with either of the two cats.

Speaking of cats, Tori has surpassed himself. Not content with almost blowing us sky high by chewing cables and then causing a gas leak, for some reason best known to him he has peed inside the toaster. Unfortunately, he didn’t see fit to alert us to this new turn of events and the first we knew of the matter was whilst making supper the other night. As the bread was toasting we looked at each other slightly puzzled at the ‘eau de chat’ wafting around the house.

On that note I think I’ll sign off before hitting the shops for all those last minute presents I still haven’t bought.

And no, we didn’t eat the toast.

We take it in turns getting up first in the morning. This means that on alternate days you get an extra 20 minutes in the warmth. Whoever gets up first takes the bread out of the bread maker (there’s nothing nicer than waking up to the smell of freshly baked bread) and puts the cats outside. The latter is important as it means that Tori can go and spray around the garden, which spares the curtains and upholstery.

When we’ve had breakfast we then spend ten minutes calling him back in again before leaving for work. For a while now he’s taken a while to come home and I’ve suspected that he might be eating elsewhere. This suspicion was given weight when he came home one day and sicked up a pile of tomatoes. I don’t feed him tomatoes and really, who would feed a cat tomatoes? So I shrugged it off until this morning when the evidence could no longer be hidden. The traitorous little philanderer came home with a smug smile and mouth full of cat food. To be continued.

We arrived home the other night to be greeted by the smell of gas. Fortunately, having watched ‘Cracker’ a few years earlier, I remembered not to switch the light on. We made our way inside to find that one of the cats had jumped on top of the cooker and accidentally knocked one of the knobs. Luckily neither of them were harmed and they enjoyed the next 40 minutes sitting in the car while we all waited for the gas to disperse. However, since then they have been less than pleased, being unceremoniously shunted out of the kitchen each time we go out. The youngest takes his displeasure out on the curtains.

It gave us a bit of a shock, I can tell you. Ten minutes later and who knows . . . .

And speaking of cats, my sister found this the other day. Something that all cat owners can relate to.

I had to pop back home again this morning. My memory is like a sieve at the moment. While I was there I thought I’d sneak in on the cats and see what they get up to while we’re at work. I don’t know what I expected – the pair of them sitting at the kitchen table plotting the next variety of cat food to simultaneously veto? Tori in the process of extracting the Sky card from that machine under the TV (he really does this) or seeking out new things to chew? But no, all was quiet. They were both asleep and seemed pretty indifferent towards my impromptu visit. Blossom extracted herself from her basket and threw herself on the floor to be stroked. Tori wandered in in to say hello. I didn’t want to come back to work.
